In a rotating-partners round robin, each player gets their team's result for every game they play. Rank players by win rate (wins divided by games played), then by point difference per game, then by total points scored.
Win rate matters because players who sit out more play fewer games. Ranking by total wins would reward whoever happened to sit out least.
What to record after each game
Just the final score, for example 11–7. Both players on the winning team get a win and +4; both on the losing team get a loss and −4. Pickleball has no draws, so a level score means the game isn't finished yet.
How to rank the standings
- Win rate: wins ÷ games played. A player who went 5–1 (83%) ranks above one who went 5–2 (71%), even though both have 5 wins.
- Point difference per game: points won minus points lost, divided by games played. This separates players with the same record without rewarding extra games.
- Total points scored: the last tiebreaker. Players still level share the rank.
Worked example
Four players from a 9-player night, after 9 rounds. Morgan arrived after round 1 and played 7 games; the others played 8.
| Player | Played | Won–lost | Win rate | Points for–against | Diff per game | Rank |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Morgan | 7 | 6–1 | 86% | 75–49 | +3.7 | 1 |
| Casey | 8 | 6–2 | 75% | 84–62 | +2.8 | 2 |
| Drew | 8 | 6–2 | 75% | 81–66 | +1.9 | 3 |
| Alex | 8 | 5–3 | 63% | 80–70 | +1.3 | 4 |
Morgan, Casey and Drew all have 6 wins, but Morgan did it in 7 games, so she's first. Casey and Drew have the same record, so point difference per game decides it: Casey's +22 over 8 games (+2.8) beats Drew's +15 (+1.9).
What about ranking by total points?
Some groups rank by the total points each player scores, a style often called Americano scoring. It works when everyone plays the same number of games. With sit-outs, players who sat less have more games to score in, so total points quietly favor them. If your night has sit-outs, win rate is the fairer first measure.
Fixed partners
With fixed partners, the team is the unit: rank teams by win rate, then point difference per game, then points, the same way. If every team plays every other team once, head-to-head is a reasonable extra tiebreaker between two tied teams.
How to score a round robin, step by step
Write down every final score
Record the score as soon as the game ends, with the court and the round.
Credit both partners
Each player gets their team's win or loss and its points for and against.
Rank by win rate
Wins divided by games played, so extra sit-outs don't count against anyone.
Break ties with point difference per game
Points won minus points lost, divided by games played.
Use total points last
If players are still level, total points scored decides it, and players level on everything share the rank.
Questions about round robin scoring
Should a round robin be ranked by wins or by points?
By win rate first. Total wins and total points both favor players who sat out less.
How do you break a tie in a pickleball round robin?
Point difference per game, then total points scored. Players level on all three share the rank.
What score should round robin games go to?
Most groups play to 11, win by 2. With a tight schedule, games to 11 with a round timer keep every court finishing together.
Do players who sit out get points?
Not in the standings above. Some groups give a bye a win; that inflates the record of whoever sat most, which is why ranking by win rate without bye credit is fairer.
How does Sitout rank players?
Exactly as on this page: win rate, then point difference per game, then points. Scores take two taps and the standings update as you go.
